Multi-Device Integration – Real-Time Vital Sign Connectivity Across Facilities

This project enabled hospitals and clinics across nine regions in Saudi Arabia to collect and centralize patient vitals from different medical devices, regardless of brand or model. Using IP-based communication and HL7 messaging via Mirth Connect, the system processes and stores real-time vital data in a unified database. With branch-code tagging and strong network coordination, the solution provides consistent data access, compliance, and improved clinical workflows across all connected sites.

Product Overview

The Multi-Device Integration project was developed to streamline how patient vital signs are collected and accessed across healthcare facilities in Saudi Arabia. Medical devices from different manufacturers were integrated using TCP/IP communication through Mirth Connect middleware. All device data is standardized into HL7 format and stored in a central MySQL database, tagged with branch codes for traceability. The integration ensures real-time data availability, operational efficiency, and full interoperability across hospital networks.

Challenges

1
Inconsistent Vendor Specifications

Different devices used varied, incomplete, or poorly documented communication protocols, complicating integration.

2
Ambiguous Technical Requirements

Lack of standardization in protocol implementation created challenges in data parsing and transformation.

3
Network Limitations

Firewall and gateway settings across multiple locations restricted real-time device communication and data flow.

Solutions

1
Vendor Alignment Process

Established clear communication and validation workflows with vendors to document integration requirements accurately.

2
Protocol Standardization

Validated device specifications and aligned them to HL7 v2.x message structures for reliable processing.

3
Network Configuration Support

Worked with hospital IT teams to define firewall rules and open communication ports for secure, bi-directional data exchange.
